On March 24th 2021, the Government of Canada established August 1 as Emancipation Day. It marks the day in 1834 when the Slavery Abolition Act came into force throughout the British Empire.
Emancipation Day is a time to remember our past and remember the people who fought for freedom. It’s a time to remember those who did not survive.
Today, we recommit ourselves to fighting anti-Black racism, xenophobia, racial discrimination, and related intolerance faced by our brothers and sisters.
