Known as the “Festival of Lights”, Diwali is celebrated by Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities across Canada and around the world. This five-day festival celebrates new beginnings and the victory of light over darkness.
The word Diwali (or Deepavali as it’s sometimes called) means “row of lights” in an ancient language of India, called Sanskrit. During this festival, people decorate their homes with lights and oil lamps, called diyas.
