Happy Emancipation Day!

Posted in Local news, National News, and Unifor 1106

On March 24, 2021, the House of Commons voted unanimously to officially designate August 1 Emancipation Day.

August 1 1834,  the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire, emancipating more than 800,000 enslaved Africans in British-controlled regions around the world, including Canada.

Emancipation Day celebrates the strength, courage, resilience and determination of Black communities in Canada.

Unifor Local 1106 calls upon all our members to reflect and engage in addressing anti-Black racism and discrimination.
